Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)
The world’s forests play a critical role by contributing to a better global environment, a healthier population and a dynamic economy. They help alleviate the effects of climate change and contain some of the richest bio-diverse areas on Earth. In addition to providing food and livelihoods for millions of people, they are also a source of natural and renewable raw materials for a large and growing range of forest products from constructional timber, to natural fibres for textiles. Crucially, at a time when global interest in sustainable alternatives to plastics has never been higher, renewable and recyclable paper-based packaging will prove a vital material, as business moves towards a wider circular economy. However, it is important those switching to paper board can be confident that the materials they specify are legally and responsibly sourced, and this is where PEFC can help.
PEFC is the world’s leading forest certification system (62% of certified forests are PEFC-certified) and the preferred choice of small and family-forest owners. PEFC operates both locally (53 national members) and globally, with stakeholders representing social, environmental and economic sustainability pillars. PEFC promotes sustainable forest management through certification. This means we can continue to benefit from the many products that forests provide, while ensuring these forests will be around for generations to come. PEFC’s distinctive ‘two trees’ label is proof that a product has been responsibly sourced.
